Images of Warsash and the Hamble River 1790 - 2009

This is the second book the author has compiled relating to the history of Warsash and the Hamble River. The text and 313 images, which include 54 in colour, provide aerial views, a connection with a wedding in the White House Washington DC, the strawberry era, sailing warships built in Warsash, the work of the Official Sculptor to the British Royal Household, the stalwart villagers and their homes, famous people, and recollections of several mansions in the neighbouring riverside villages.

Scenes are shown of the Royal Navy Combined Operations base and its personnel at HMS Tormentor in Warsash during the Second World War, the exploits of the landing craft and commandos in the English Channel, on D-Day beaches in Normandy and inland on the continent.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Warsash and the Hamble River - A History and Guide

The written account and 200 images cover the wooden warship building days from 1807 to 1813, the fishing boats during the crab and lobster era, industries and strawberry cultivation, village inns, the wealthy and infliential personas who resided in, or visited, the grand mansions, the large estates and the airfield. Yachting and boat-building were also principla activities during the 20th century with the Warsash Maritime Academy prividing training for Merchant Navy personnel.

The full period covered is approximately two hundred years, from 1770 to 1970, although there are instances of earlier dates, and occasionally the details are up to the 21st century.

Bryan Woodford has written two richly illustrated books about the history of the villages that form the Parish of Hook-with-Warsash. Together they cover over two hundred years of history from 1790. Both books can be purchased from the Warsash Heritage Centre.
